First Collegiate Golf Tournament Win At PGA National
I’ve been told since the first day I could hold a golf club that “practice makes perfect.” Well obviously when you are a teenager with a social life and extra curricular activities, playing golf every day after school when you could be hanging out with your friends, isn’t always top priority. This was something I always battled, yet knew what was best for me, and what was going to get me into college. Once getting into college, it’s a whole different ball game. My job was to simply play golf every single day for hours on end. But it was okay. Because I had other teammates who did the same thing with me and it was fun! Your routine is to wake up, go to class, have some lunch, then hit the links. Now the first couple of years was not the best for me performance wise. But everything that I did leading up to my senior year was a learning experience. Any bad round that I played (and there were plenty of them) I took with a grain of salt, because I knew my time would come.
I remember going into my senior year with very high hopes. The pressure was off. I wasn’t playing for more scholarship money, I was playing for me. Something I look back on now and realize that when I was a freshman, sophomore, and junior I always had to make someone else happy, whether it was my teammates, coach, teachers or parents. But senior year was my year as far as golf and school went. I remember we had a really great team as well. The season started out nice. And fortunately my golf swing was going well and I did not need any golf lessons from my swing coach who was 1,500 miles away. I was playing great golf. One of the huge things that gave me new confidence was my new Scotty Cameron Newport 2.0 putter. Man was I obsessed with that thing. I couldn’t miss a putt!
We were all getting ready to play one of the biggest tournaments of the year at this PGA Golf Course, one of the best golf courses in the state. I played alright on the practice round, yet remembering the one hole I had taken a 9 on the year before when we played in this tournament. But I had to look past that and make this year a new one.
The next morning we did our normal routine, stop by Panera Bread for breakfast then head to the course to warm up. I was nervous because there were so many of the big schools in our conference there. I really wanted to do well. I felt good though prior to tee off. I was smashing my driver, a Ping G5 golf club down the center of the driving range. What a feeling! So we all went and teed off. And wow. What a round. I played great and had a really a solid round. If I had a slip up, I’d fix it with a birdie on the next. I was draining putts left and right. I remember thinking that I wished my parents were there to watch it. I went to school really far away from them, so this was not possible. And the final thing I remember about that round was the last hole which was a 420 yard par 4 with the wind in our face. I hit driver, and my Callaway Steelhead Plus 3-wood to 10 feet. I sank the putt for my birdie to finish with a 1-under, 71 which included a three-hour postponement midway through the round due to poor weather. And with that, I was in the lead! Probably the stiffest competitors in the division were at this tournament, many who are Professional Tour players today…and there I was the leader after day one.
The next day we woke up with torrential downpour. We all warmed up on the range, however just as we were getting ready to tee off, the NCAA and host college golf team called the tournament that day. I was really excited to get out there and rifle the flag sticks again, but they wouldn’t let me. However, this meant I had won the tournament! My first college win had finally come!
This was by far the second best round of golf I have ever played in my life… the best round of golf… well I’ll tell you about that later.
