Hireko Golf Clubs: To buy, or not to buy, that is the question.?

Does anyone have any ‘personal’ experience with Hireko golf?

I’m a lefty, and I have much experience with Hireko. I love them- their irons, FWs and hybrids especially. Right now my whole bag is Acer XK except the wedges and putter: XK driver, 3w and 19* hybrid, XK Std. (4 and 5 iron), XK Pro (6-pw). My wedges are Inazone Shadow CNC from Diamond Tour Golf, and my putter is an Odyssey White Hot XG #9 (I don’t like Anser-style heads, which is about all LH components are… that, or fugly).

I’m going to look into the XK driver, but I’m waiting for the QuikFit model to come out in April.

This will probably sound like an ad, but honestly, I can’t think of any other way to put it (and sadly, I’m not being paid for any of this). I also don’t really care what I sound like, because it’s how I really feel. Everything I got from them came on spec. This is tough to do, even for the Big Boys, due to the nature of the manufacturing process. The FWs, hybrids and irons all have a nice sound at impact. The driver is a little tinny, but not “make you cringe” material. You may find the Pro irons have thicker soles than the Std’s, but it’s alright; the offset of the Std coupled with the longer blade length is what makes them more forgiving. The Pro’s have less offset than Callaway X models (their forged models have less offset than the “ultimate” players forgings- Mizuno).

As for some cons: I don’t care for the wedges. Not their make or anything, but their bounce angles. They have a LOT in the XB line. For someone like me who plays on varied conditions, I feel more comfortable with the “average” (12*) bounce for a SW… which, coincidentally, is why I went with the Inazone’s. I’m not a big fan of the triangle shaped driver- the XF’s have a more pear (traditional) shape. I also don’t like the one loft option for LH’s…

You can even do your wallet a favor and pick up the shafts and grips from Hireko, as well. I have the True Ace Blue Crush in my driver, and I prefer that to the V2’s (tour and nontour), ProLaunch Blue’s (w/Axis and without), Platinum and Red (both w/out Axis), Fujikura 26.3, Proto By You, GD AD Throttle, YS 6+… yeah, I’ve spent a lot of money on shafts and clubs. I also have wedges by Callaway, Nike, Vokey, Cleveland and Adams, an Adams hybrid, Nike Sasquatch and SuMo 5000, Callaway FT-3, 5 and 9 and an Adams Speedline (acquired not too long ago). I did overpower the Cadence Red FW and hybrid shafts, so I switched out to an NVS 85 (FW) and NV 105 (hybrid). I also highly recommend the Apollo Standard Stepless- yes, it does compare to any of the “big boys” after I tested it against the Project X, True Temper Dynamic Gold and FST Pro. The Shadow and Hump are also very good shafts. Their Karma brand grips old up just as well as any. Just don’t get white: I’ve NEVER had good luck with white grips- Lamkin NDURs, TackiMac Itomics and the Karma’s… even with cleanings every day!

Even with the lack of loft options, Hireko STILL has the biggest component LH selection, hands down. Not only that, but Jeff Summitt is one of the best, and knowledgable as can be. Just because I forgot and I don’t want to try to figure out where to put it, but: even if you get all Hireko heads and decide you want the Project X driver and iron shafts, you’ll STILL come out ahead price-wise, if you bought everything from the “big boys”. Even better, you won’t lose any performance. This is coming from someone with a 102mph swing speed and shoots in the low-to-mid 80’s.

So to sum it up: buy with confidence. And remember- just because someone/thing is plastering their ads everywhere it doesn’t qualify them as being “good”. It’s amazing that people are cynical about other commodities that do that, but when it comes to golf equipment they allow themselves to be lead around by their noses. The “big boys” don’t make junk, but they aren’t “better” in any way- expecially since they’re all made in the same foundries in China and Taiwan. Get what you like, get them fit, then go out and enjoy.
